  Rome is divided into XX municipalities of which the various quarters do part.
 
  The historical center of the town is inside the MUNICIPALITY I.  
  Municipality I includes the traditional XXII rioni (zones of the historical centre) surrounded  
  by aureliane walls (except the Rione Borgo, sourrounded by leonine walls, and Prati).  
     
  The aureliane walls were made build by the Roman Emperor Aureliano in 270 - 273  
  (III sec.) to defend Rome, capital of the Roman empire, from the attacks of the barbarians.  
     
  The leonine walls were built in 847 (XIX sec.) under the Pope papacy Leone IV  
  as defensive walls around the Vatican.

  SHORT HISTORY OF RIONI
     
  The "rione" word comes from Latinum "regio" ("regione"," area" in English).  
  It was used since the Middle Ages to show the historical center of Rome.  
     
  1. VI SEC. AC: 4 rioni are instituted for the first time by Servio Tullio  
  2. IMPERIAL AGE: the rioni become 14  
  - FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE -  
  3. XII SEC.: new subdivision in 12 rioni  
  4. XIII SEC.: new subdivision in 13 rioni  
  5. RENAISSANCE: urbanization of wide deserted zones and building of squares and fountains
  6. 1586: Pope Sisto V adds Rione Borgo  
  7. 1798: reorganization in 12 rioni  
  8. NAPOLEONICO PERIOD: division of the town in 8 childbirths called "giustizie"  
  9. 1874: the rioni become 15
  10. 1920: birth of the last ward (Prati Quarter)

The "rioni" do not have some precise borders so it is possible that a determinate area is
considered as part of several "rioni".
They have chronologically classified with Roman numbers (I - XX)
from several ancient (Rione Monti - 1100) to the most recent (Rione Prati - 1920)

  I - Rione MONTI (1100)
Rione Monti, Rome
 
  The most ancient quarter of Rome, anciently called Suburra  
  quarter of the mob, very much poor.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Foro di Nerva, Foro di Augusto, Scala Santa, San Giovanni in Laterano,  
  Santa Maria Maggiore, Colle Oppio.  
     
     
 
  II - Rione TREVI (1100)
Rione Trevi, Rome
 
  Born in 1743, his name comes from trivium, since in the Middle Ages  
  it was the outlet of 3 streets. Afterwards he became feud of the column  
  and earth family of flourishing gardens with the splendid Barberini and  
  Quirinale palaces.  
  The Rione Trevi is famous above all for the very famous Trevi Fountain.

  Trevi Fountain, Quirinal Palace, Barberini Palace, Piazza Venezia,  
  SS.Apostoli.  
     
 
 
  III - Rione COLONNA (1100)
Rione Colonna, Rome
 
  Risen on the ancient structures of Rome, between the Pantheon,  
  and the Marco Aurelio column, the heart of Rome gravitares about at the big  
  Capranica Chigi, Fiano, Montecitorio palaces and it is crossed by  
  Via del Corso.

  Ara Pacis, Pantheon, Piazza della Minerva, Piazza di Pietra,  
  Tempio di Adriano, Via delle Quattro Fontane, San Lorenzo in Lucina,  
  Column of Marcus Aurelius .  
     
 
 
  IV - Rione CAMPO MARZIO (1100)
Rione Campo Marzio, Rome
 
  Anciently he was lodging many monumental buildings. The Pantheon is the  
  intact only one arrived to us.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Via del Corso, Via della Scrofa, Via di Ripetta, Via dei Coronari,  
  Campo dei Fiori, Via del Pellegrino, Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps,  
  Mausoleum of Augustus, Via Margutta.  
     
     
     
 
 
  V - Rione PONTE (1100)
Rione Ponte, Rome
 
  It was the name of the square, destroyed with the creation of the muraglioni of  
  the Tevere, which represented, joined to bridge Sant' Angelo, the only access  
  street at the Vaticani villages.

  Sforza Cesarini Palace, Altemps Palace, Sant'Angelo bridge,  
  Castel Sant'Angelo, Piazza Navona, Santa Maria della Pace, Bramante Arch.  
     
     
     
 
 
  VI - Rione PARIONE (1100)
Rione Parione, Rome
 
  Despite the baroque and nineteenth-century interventions he keeps  
  a mark medieval with his complicated net of alleys.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Piazza Navona, Via del Governo Vecchio, Piazza del Fico, Piazza Pasquino,

  VII - Rione REGOLA (1100)
 
  The Apartment Farnesi is located in this Rione which derived its name  
  from "renula" ("soft sand" in English, "rena" or "spiaggia" in Italian).  
  This area is close to the Tiber river and many of the streets which cross it  
  anciently were covered of sand.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Via Giulia, Via di Monserrato, Piazza Ricci, Piazza Farnese and the splendid  
  ancient palaces which are in this quarter.  
     
     
 
 
  VIII - Rione SANT' EUSTACHIO (1100)
 
  Rione of the center of Rome built on the ruins of impressive  
  ancient buildings.  
  Full of churches, striking monuments and characteristic foreshortenings.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Campo dei Fiori, Teatro di Pompeo area, Torre Argentina, Pantheon,  
  Madama Palace.  
     
     
     
 
 
  IX - Rione PIGNA (1100)
 
  The name of this Rione means "pine cone" in Italian and comes from  
  the colossal bronze pine cone , the Pigna , which decorated a fountain in  
  Ancient Rome. It includes the area between Piazza Navona and  
  Sant' Angelo's Bridge.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Piazza Navona area , Via dei Coronari area, Sant' Angelo's Bridge .  
     
     
     
 
 
  X - Rione CAMPITELLI (1100)
 
  The logo is a dragon head on white field: according to a medieval  
  legend, it was the personification of the devil in the temple of Castore and  
  Polluce in the Roman Forum.  
  It includes the area between the Roman Forum and the Capitoline Hill.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Piazza in Campitelli, Piazza Margana, Piazza Venezia, Roman Forum,  
  Capitoline Hill.  
     
     
 
 
  XI - Rione SANT'ANGELO (1100)
 
  Small but rich of historical memories. In this area you can admire  
  the Ghetto quarter and the Theatre of Marcellus.  
  It was chosen by Pope Paul IV, in 1555, which center of the Ghetto.  
  Still today it is characterized from the presence of the roman Jewish  
  community.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Ghetto area, Theatre of Marcellus.  
     
     
 
 
  XII - Rione RIPA (1100)
 
  The rione Ripa, been born in the 1921 from Testaccio and San Saba,  
  comprises the Aventino, the Valle Murcia and the Tiber Island.  
  The Aventino, popular quarter of the ancient Rome, has become today  
  a rinomated residential zone, center of numerous embassies.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Tiber Island, San Bartolomeo all'Isola, Arch of Janus , Mouth of Trught,  
  Circo Massimo, Santa Maria in Cosmedin.  
     
     
 
 
  XIII - Rione TRASTEVERE (1300)
 
  The Trastevere Quarter is found on the skillful Tiber river.  
  The name "Trastevere" derives from the Latin" trans Tiberim" meaning  
  "to beyond the Tevere”.  
  Here you can "feel" a typically roman atmosphere.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Trastevere area, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Corsini Palace ,  
  Accademia dei Lincei.  
     
     
 
 
  XIV - Rione BORGO (1800)
 
  Borgo is the only rione whose name has an English origin, "burg",  
  that is a small village enclosed within one encircled building.  
  This name was chosen because of the presence of English students  
  in this area.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Basilica of St.Peter's, Castel Sant' Angelo, Janiculum,  
  Santa Maria in Traspontina, Santo Spirito in Sassia.  
     
     
 
 
  XV - Rione ESQUILINO (1800)
 
  The Esquilino is an area comprised between the Laterano,  
  Santa Maria Maggiore and Porta Maggiore.  
  comprised in ancient immense zone enlivened from the presence of the three  
  tops of the Fagutal to the west, of the Cispius to north of the Oppius to south.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Basilica of St. John Lateran, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore,  
  Porta Maggiore, Porta Magica (Piazza Vittorio)  
     
     
 
 
  XVI - Rione LUDOVISI (1800)
 
  This rione takes the name from the grandson of Gregorio XV, cardinal  
  Ludovico Ludovisi, on whose property is risen and it has been developed.  
  In the ancient Rome it was zone outside of the city, without important  
  buildings, but full of tombs.  
  Here you can admire famous villas like the villa of Lucio Licinio Lucullo  
  (Horti Luculliani) constructed after the 63 a.C.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Piazza Barberini, Fountain of the four rivers , Via Vittorio Veneto,  
  Porta Pinciana.  
 
 
  XVII - Rione SALLUSTIANO (1800)
 
  This quarter is situated on the part north of the Quirinale hill.  
  Its name comes from the "Horti Sallustiani".  
  Here on september 1870 was the “Breccia di Porta Pia ” after which Rome  
  was declared "Capitale" of Italy.

  Porta Pia, Via Nomentana, Casina delle Civette, Villa Torlonia,

  XVIII - Rione CASTRO PRETORIO (1900)
 
  The Rione in front of the Termini Station, with the imposing Terme  
  of Diocleziano and Piazza della Repubblica.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  San Vitale, Santa Maria degli Angeli, Santa Susanna, Baths of Diocletian .  
     
     
     
     
     
 
  XIX - Rione CELIO (1900)
 
  The Celio borned in relatively recent age, and just in year 1921,  
  from a subdivision of the rione Campitelli.  
  The logo represents a statue founded in Via Capo d'Africa ("head of  
  Africa street" in English).  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Colosseum, Ludus Magnus, Via Merulana, Basilica of St. John Lateran,  
  Domus Aurea, San Pietro in Vincoli, SS. Quattro Coronati, Villa Celimontana.  
     
     
 
 
  XX - Rione TESTACCIO (1900)
 
  It is born in the 1921 from close Rione Ripa.  
  The name indicates the “Mons Testaceus”, a knoll that was come to form  
  from refuses of amphoras.  
  The amphora is the symbol of its logo.  
  WHAT TO SEE  
  Monte Testaccio. If you like clubbing you can go in one of the several  
  discos of Monte Testaccio like "Radio Londra" or "Akab".

  XXI - Rione SAN SABA (1900)
 
  This Rione, like the previous one, is born from the more ancient Rione Ripa.  
  It goes from the "San Sebastian Door" to "Pyramid of Cestius".

  XXII - Rione PRATI (1900)
 
  This is the newer Rione of Rome.  
  Its name derives from "prato" ("grass" in English) because at the beginnig of
