Rome is divided into XX municipalities of which the various quarters do part.
| |
The historical center of the town is inside the MUNICIPALITY I. |
| |
Municipality I includes the traditional XXII rioni (zones of the historical centre) surrounded |
| |
by aureliane walls (except the Rione Borgo, sourrounded by leonine walls, and Prati). |
| |
| |
The aureliane walls were made build by the Roman Emperor Aureliano in 270 - 273 |
| |
(III sec.)
to defend Rome, capital of the Roman empire, from the attacks of the barbarians. |
| |
| |
The leonine walls were built in 847 (XIX sec.)
under the Pope papacy Leone IV |

as defensive walls around the Vatican. |

| They have chronologically classified with Roman numbers (I - XX) |
| from several ancient (Rione Monti - 1100) to the most recent (Rione Prati - 1920) |
